Elinore Marie Spence, 79, of Goetzville, worked for 20 years as a housekeeper and also as a tribal
census taker. Mrs. Spence died Friday, January 19, 2007, at Mackinac Straits Hospital in St. Ignace.
She was born January 12, 1928, in Cedarville, to Henry Joseph and Marie (nee Dakota) Morrow.
She married Robert Spence on November 29, 1948.
Mrs. Spence worked as a housekeeper and also as a census taker for the Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of
Chippewa Indians. She was a member of the St. Mathias Church Women’s Group and the Sault Ste. Marie
Tribe of Chippewa Indians. She enjoyed cooking, traveling, dancing, fishing, and flower gardening.
Mrs. Spence treasured her family and loved to have large family gatherings, friends said.
Mrs. Spence is survived by one son and his family, Gale and Marcia Spence of Kinross; two daughters
and their families, Marie and Wayne Lawless of Cedarville and Joan and Stanley Nettleton of Pickford;
grandchildren and their families, Kimberly and Dean Porter, Robert Spence, Crystal Spence, Bill Spence,
Katie Spence, Merilee and David Hall, Allison and Bradley Newell, Justin Lawless, Tabitha and Chuck Newell,
Stanley and Ashley Nettleton, and Tina and Jason Green; greatgrandchildren Courtney Porter, Chase Porter,
Natalie Spence, Cassidy Yarnell, Aaron Newell, Josh Newell, Lydia Hall, Donald Newell, Bill Newell,
Joe Newell, Taylor Green, James Green, Alexis Green, and Johanna Nettleton, and a great-great-grandchild,
Jake Newell. Also surviving are two sisters, Leona Louer of Ishpeming and Sally Steele of Pickford.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert; one son, Dale Spence; one brother, Henry Morrow Jr.;
and two sisters, Beverly Smale and Faye Crisp. Services were held Monday, January 22, at Reamer Galer
Funeral Home in Pickford. Visitation was held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., with a funeral at 1:00 p.m. with
Pastor James Hammons officiating.
